FIFA has officially scrapped the third-place playoff match of the Arab Cup between the UAE national team and Saudi Arabia, initially scheduled to occur in Doha, Qatar. This decision comes after severe weather, including heavy rain, rendered it impossible to safely continue the match.
Held at Khalifa International Stadium, notorious as a primary venue for the tournament, the match faced complications when steady rainfall led to water pooling on the playing field. As the rain persisted, the surface became increasingly slippery, posing risks for player safety and fair play.
Faced with deteriorating conditions, officials opted to pause the match in order to evaluate the situation, while stadium personnel worked to rectify the pitch. Unfortunately, unrelenting rain thwarted these recovery efforts, ultimately leading FIFA to determine that resuming the game was infeasible.
Before the abandonment of the match, the first half concluded without any scoring. The teams were well-matched, although the worsening weather conditions hindered gameplay as the rain intensified as halftime approached. The scoreboard read 0-0 at the point of suspension.
FIFA underscored that player safety was paramount in this cancellation. With no improvement in weather expected and no viable option for rescheduling the match, the organization opted to cancel the fixture outright. This decision unexpectedly ended a contest between two fierce regional rivals and marked a rare instance of weather-related cancellations at the tournament.
Both teams showed understanding regarding the cancellation, recognizing that extreme weather rendered further play impossible despite the organizers’ best efforts.
