FCC Grants SpaceX Green Light for 7,500 New Starlink Satellites

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has given the green light for SpaceX to launch an additional 7,500 second-generation Starlink satellites. This marks a significant expansion of its satellite internet constellation, effectively doubling the number of authorized Gen2 Starlink satellites to a total of 15,000 orbiting the planet.

In tandem with the satellite increase, the FCC has also allowed SpaceX to improve these satellites' functionality. Now, SpaceX is permitted to operate its satellites across five distinct frequency bands, optimizing spectrum use for enhanced efficiency. This enhancement is set to boost the network’s capacity and broaden its coverage.

Additionally, the FCC has lifted previous regulatory limitations that hampered overlapping satellite coverage. This policy shift allows SpaceX to deploy more flexible and overlapping satellite signals, significantly improving internet performance and reliability, especially in traditionally underserved or challenging connectivity areas.

These advancements form part of SpaceX’s ongoing mission to enhance global internet access by providing faster and more reliable broadband services through its Starlink satellite network. The augmented constellation alongside improved operational capabilities is anticipated to deliver better quality internet service worldwide, particularly in remote and underserved regions.
