FBI Investigates Motive Behind Guardsmen Shooting Near White House on Thanksgiving Eve

In a disturbing incident just blocks from the White House on Thanksgiving eve, two National Guard soldiers found themselves in a critical situation after being shot. The FBI, along with its joint terrorism task force, is investigating the motive behind the assault, which has been characterized as an “ambush-style” attack by an Afghan immigrant. This unexpected violence reignites discussions on immigration policy and has raised concerns about national tensions.

The event occurred around midday outside a bustling subway station in Washington, D.C., a location frequented by office workers, tourists, and shoppers. This heightened the alarm surrounding the attack. Reports indicate that the soldiers, part of a security patrol initiated by President Donald Trump, were stationed near the station entrance when a perpetrator approached, brandishing a gun and opening fire without warning.

Both soldiers, serving in the West Virginia National Guard, were shot multiple times and rushed to the hospital in grave condition. Other troops in the vicinity reacted swiftly, engaging the suspect in a firefight, resulting in injury and capture of the shooter on-site.

The individual identified as the shooter is Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national who arrived in the U.S. in 2021 under Operation Allies Welcome. This initiative, launched during President Joe Biden's administration, aimed to assist Afghans who supported U.S. forces during the Afghanistan war. A family member informed NBC News that Lakanwal had a decade of service in the Afghan army, collaborating with American Special Forces.

Authorities confirmed that Lakanwal had no prior criminal record in the United States. He had applied for asylum in late 2024 and gained approval earlier this year, living in Washington state and employed by Amazon at the time of the shooting.

Following the incident, the Secret Service enacted a temporary security lockdown for the White House as a precautionary measure. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth announced that President Trump requested an additional 500 National Guard troops to bolster security in the capital.

This attack prompted swift political reactions. In a video message from Florida, President Trump condemned the shooting as “an act of evil, hatred, and terror,” and emphasized a re-evaluation of all Afghan immigrants who entered the U.S. during President Biden’s tenure.

Shortly after Trump's statement, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services paused all immigration applications concerning Afghan nationals. The agency indicated a need to reassess security and screening protocols.

Vice President JD Vance stated the attack underscored the necessity for stricter immigration regulations, asserting the need for the U.S. to be more proactive in deporting individuals who he claimed “should not be here.”

However, critics argue that the Trump administration is leveraging this tragedy to push for aggressive immigration policies. Numerous community groups and civil rights organizations warn that innocent people may be unwittingly affected by sweeping decisions lacking substantive evidence.

At this critical juncture in Washington, tensions were already high. Just five days before, a federal judge had ruled that National Guard troops could not engage in law enforcement activities in the city without the mayor’s approval. Yet, this ruling was delayed for the Trump administration to pursue an appeal. Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser, critical of the Guard's deployment from the outset, labeled the shooting a “targeted attack” and reiterated her apprehensions regarding federal troops in urban areas.

Police officials emphasized that the assailant appeared to have acted independently, with no immediate broader threat to the public. Nonetheless, this assault raises substantial issues concerning security, immigration practices, and the deployment of military forces within U.S. cities.

This event adds to the pattern of National Guard deployments across cities under President Trump, including Los Angeles, Chicago, Portland, and Memphis. Local leaders in these areas contend that the administration is employing military presence to intimidate communities and exert political influence.

As the FBI's investigation progresses, many Americans await insights into what drove the assailant and the broader implications for national security and immigration policies. For the families of the injured soldiers and the residents of D.C., the hope remains for swift recovery, understanding, and peace following this unsettling holiday week.
