Serious allegations have emerged regarding the treatment of workers at a Chinese factory responsible for crafting the well-known Labubu dolls. A report by the U.S.-based group, China Labor Watch (CLW), claims that employees at Shunjia Toys Co Ltd, a Pop Mart supplier, endured extensive overtime, were pressured to sign incomplete contracts, and lacked access to paid leave.
Labubu dolls, famous for their intriguing "blind box" buying experience, have surged in popularity around the globe. Pop Mart, the Beijing toy retailer behind the brand, has acknowledged the allegations and is currently conducting an investigation. The company emphasized its commitment to the integrity of its supply chain, promising to address any violations of labor policies by its suppliers.
Furthermore, Pop Mart pointed out that it conducts regular audits of its suppliers, including annual checks by independent, internationally accepted auditors.
The CLW investigation focused on Shunjia Toys Co Ltd, situated in Guangdong province, southern China. Interviews with 51 factory workers were conducted to assess hiring practices, contract transparency, and working conditions. This facility is a major production hub for Pop Mart, employing more than 4,500 individuals.
Key findings outlined various labor issues, such as unlawful overtime, vague contract clauses, and inadequate safety training. No child labor was reported; however, 16-year-old employees faced similar working conditions as adults, missing the protections mandated by Chinese law.
CLW urged Pop Mart to take immediate action, recommending compensation for affected workers and ensuring that its production practices adhere to both Chinese labor laws and international standards. The organization stated that conditions at factories like Shunjia are disproportionately affected by the sourcing strategies and scheduling practices of their partner brands.
Labubu dolls, with their quirky elf-like designs and distinct jagged teeth, have created a worldwide sensation. This craze has sparked extensive lines at retail establishments, with celebrity endorsements from stars like Kim Kardashian and Lisa from K-pop group Blackpink boosting Pop Mart's global outreach.
