A former member of Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), Narain Singh Chaura, tried to shoot Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Sukhbir Singh Badal at the entrance of the Golden Temple in Amritsar on Wednesday. Chaura fired at Badal, but the people nearby quickly stopped him and gave him to the police.
Sukhbir Singh Badal was sitting in a wheelchair at the time. He was wearing a blue uniform like a temple worker and holding a spear. When Chaura attacked, Badal ducked to protect himself. The temple workers and visitors acted fast and made sure no one got hurt. Their quick action stopped the attack from becoming worse.
Narain Singh Chaura is known for being part of Babbar Khalsa, a banned group. In 1984, he went to Pakistan and started smuggling weapons. He also wrote a book about fighting techniques and other unlawful ideas. Chaura has been involved in many crimes. One of the most serious was in 2004 when he helped with the Burail jailbreak. In that jailbreak, four prisoners escaped by digging a 94-foot tunnel. These prisoners included the people who killed Punjab’s former Chief Minister Beant Singh. Chaura has been in trouble with the law many times and has spent time in jail for his actions.

Police officer Harpal Singh said that strong security was already in place for Sukhbir Singh Badal because he is an important leader with Z-plus security. The officer also said that these security measures worked and helped stop a bigger problem from happening.
This attack happened just one day after Sukhbir Singh Badal started his guard duty at the Golden Temple. He was doing this duty as a punishment given by the Akal Takht, the highest Sikh authority. The punishment was for mistakes made during the SAD government from 2007 to 2017. These mistakes included incidents of disrespect towards religious texts and a police shooting at Kotkapura. As part of the punishment, other SAD leaders were also given tasks like cleaning toilets and serving food in the temple kitchen.
After the attack, many political leaders spoke out. SAD leader Daljit Singh Cheema said this attack might be part of a bigger plan to cause trouble in Punjab. He asked for a full investigation and said the government must take responsibility for what happened.
Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring blamed the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government for not making sure Sukhbir Singh Badal was safe. He said the police should have done more to stop this from happening. He also asked for the police officer in charge to be suspended. Warring said, “There may be anger against Sukhbir Badal in some people’s hearts, but that doesn’t mean you shoot him.”
Now, the police are looking into the attack to find out why it happened. Many people are asking how this could happen and what can be done to make sure it doesn’t happen again. This event shows that better security is needed to keep everyone safe and to avoid such problems in the future.
