The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi (DoH) has officially published a new Guideline for the Management of Multiple Sclerosis (MS), setting a unified standard for diagnosis and treatment across the Emirate. The guideline was developed in collaboration with the National Multiple Sclerosis Society (NMSS).
This new framework aims to improve early diagnosis, provide evidence-based treatment, and ensure a smoother and more predictable patient journey. It reflects Abu Dhabi’s commitment to building a smart, patient-centred healthcare system and strengthening specialised neurological care.
The guideline was prepared by a scientific task force from the NMSS Medical Advisory Committee and reviewed by neurologists across the UAE. It is based on the latest clinical research and also considers practical challenges faced by doctors and insurance providers. The goal is to support timely diagnosis and help patients access advanced therapies without unnecessary delays.
One of the key highlights of the guideline is the alignment between clinical decisions and insurance coverage. By bringing medical practice and reimbursement processes closer together, the framework ensures that treatment approvals are clearer and more consistent. This helps reduce waiting time for patients and supports early intervention, which is critical in managing multiple sclerosis.
Her Excellency Dr Noura Al Ghaithi, Undersecretary of the Department of Health – Abu Dhabi, said the guideline creates a stronger foundation for early diagnosis and evidence-based care. She stated that the initiative demonstrates Abu Dhabi’s ambition to set global standards in specialised healthcare and improve the quality of life for people living with MS. She also highlighted the importance of collaboration between regulators, clinicians, and insurance partners in delivering integrated and timely care.
Her Excellency Dr Fatima Al Kaabi, Vice Chair of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, said the new guideline reflects Abu Dhabi’s focus on partnerships, scientific research, and patient needs. She added that the collaboration between DoH and NMSS has created a clearer and more structured pathway of care, ensuring better access to effective treatment for MS patients.
To support the implementation of the guideline, DoH and NMSS organised two multidisciplinary workshops. These sessions included neurologists, insurance providers, and representatives from the MS community. The workshops focused on practical application of the guideline in diagnosis, treatment planning, and insurance coverage, with special attention to early intervention and reducing treatment delays.
The launch of the MS guideline marks a significant step forward for multiple sclerosis care in Abu Dhabi. By offering clear clinical direction and improving coordination within the healthcare system, the new framework aims to enhance treatment outcomes and improve the overall quality of life for patients living with MS.
