The wife of former President Yoon Suk Yeol, who was ousted from her position last year, has been acquitted of several serious allegations, including stock price manipulation and breaches of political funding laws. Prosecutors have indicated their plans to appeal the not-guilty verdicts, as reported.
This decision surfaces during an intense period of legal challenges linked to investigations into Yoon's temporary martial law declaration in 2024 and the subsequent controversies surrounding the former first couple.
Kim, the ex-first lady, has consistently denied all charges. Her legal representatives announced they would thoroughly evaluate the decision made by the Seoul Central District Court and decide on the next steps concerning the bribery conviction she received earlier.
The leading judge on the three-judge panel noted that the first lady's role lacks formal governmental authority but serves an important symbolic function. He stated, “Although not every individual in such a position may exemplify ideal behavior, they should not create a negative example for society.”
Kim has been fined ₩12.8 million (approximately $8,990) and ordered to return a costly necklace related to the legal case. She has remained in custody since August pending the investigation.
Initially, prosecutors sought a 15-year prison term along with fines amounting to ₩2.9 billion if she was found guilty on all charges.
Upon hearing the verdict, Kim appeared composed, dressed in formal attire and wearing a face mask. Her attorneys released a statement expressing that she “humbly accepts the court's serious critique” and expressed regret for causing public alarm.
Outside the courthouse, supporters of Yoon and Kim endured frigid temperatures, celebrating as the court exonerated her on significant charges.
One facet of the inquiry pertains to gifts received from the Unification Church, which has denied expecting reciprocal favors, with its leader Han Hak-ja, who is also undergoing trial, refuting bribery claims.
Kim has faced substantial public attention even prior to Yoon's presidency, with scrutiny surrounding her educational history and allegations of stock price manipulation. Additionally, her ties to a political intermediary and a shaman invited widespread disapproval concerning their potential influence on the former presidential couple.
Yoon is currently entangled in eight ongoing legal battles, including accusations related to an attempted coup following his unsuccessful martial law declaration in December 2024. He is appealing a five-year prison sentence for obstructing arrest attempts.
In a separate case, prosecutors are pursuing the death penalty for Yoon, alleging he orchestrated the insurrection. A court ruling is anticipated on February 19.
Yoon maintains that his martial law declaration fell within his presidential powers and was meant to alert the public regarding government obstruction by opposition factions.
