Ariane 6 soared into the skies from France’s Kourou space base in French Guiana on Tuesday evening, marking a significant step for Europe’s commercial space efforts. The rocket lifted off precisely at 6:02 pm local time (2102 GMT), carrying the Sentinel-1D satellite, part of the European Union’s Copernicus Earth observation programme.
This launch marks the third commercial flight for Ariane 6 since the expendable rocket system entered service last year, underscoring Europe’s growing presence in global space operations. Sentinel-1D, built by Thales Alenia Space, weighs over two tonnes and is equipped with advanced radar imaging instruments capable of capturing the Earth’s surface regardless of weather or light conditions.
The satellite is set to orbit at an altitude of 693 kilometres, offering continuous monitoring of environmental and climatic conditions. The separation of the satellite from the rocket was scheduled 33 minutes and 51 seconds after lift-off, ensuring precise positioning for optimal operation.
The Sentinel-1 series is designed to provide high-resolution radar imagery critical for applications ranging from forest management to disaster monitoring and maritime surveillance. By operating day and night, even through clouds, Sentinel-1D will significantly strengthen Europe’s capacity to observe and respond to environmental changes.
This mission highlights the growing sophistication of Europe’s space technology and demonstrates the Ariane 6 system’s reliability for deploying heavy payloads into orbit.
