On Thursday, military units from France and Germany touched down in Greenland, as Denmark prepares for collaborative military exercises with European partners. These initiatives aim to bolster Arctic defenses and address U.S. worries over the island’s security following President Trump’s controversial suggestion for the U.S. to buy Greenland.
The strategically significant Danish territory, rich in minerals, has caught the eye of the U.S. and other global powers. Trump has argued that Greenland should not come under the sway of Russia or China, stating that Denmark cannot guarantee its protection. He indicated that all options, including military measures, might be employed to safeguard American interests.
Denmark and Greenland have firmly denied these assertions, stating the island is not for sale and warning that threats or military force could undermine international law. Several European nations, including Germany, France, Sweden, and Norway, have rallied behind Denmark, emphasizing that any unilateral moves by the U.S. could jeopardize NATO’s credibility.
To counter these escalations, Denmark and Greenland have intensified their military operations on the island with NATO allies. European forces are gearing up for larger exercises expected later this year. A recon team of 13 German troops has already set foot in Nuuk, while French forces are en route, signaling a robust deterrent stance to Washington.
Experts observe that these military deployments serve a dual function: demonstrating a readiness to defend Greenland while signaling Denmark’s commitment to addressing U.S. security concerns. Danish officials confirmed engagement with their European counterparts to enhance Arctic defense and regional surveillance.
Following discussions with U.S. officials at the White House, Denmark and Greenland have decided to create a working group addressing security and policy matters. However, they made it clear that the U.S. demands regarding the acquisition of Greenland are unacceptable and infringe upon Danish sovereignty.
Footage from Nuuk showed Danish military arrivals for the exercises, highlighting the growing European dedication to protecting Greenland. France has reaffirmed that NATO and EU backing is crucial to securing the Arctic region, delivering a strong message to the U.S. and other stakeholders.
