In an alarming escalation of violence targeting minority groups in Bangladesh, five homes belonging to a Hindu family in Dumritala village were set on fire, located in the primarily Muslim district of Pirojpur. This act of arson occurred on December 28, shortly after a brutal mob killing in Mymensingh district, where a garment worker, Dipu Chandra Das, was lynched and burned due to blasphemy accusations.
Witnesses reported that most family members were away visiting relatives during the incident, leaving an elderly relative behind who noticed flames engulfing one of the houses. Their attempts to raise the alarm failed to contain the blaze, which rapidly spread to four more homes. Thankfully, there were no injuries as the family was largely absent, but the fire resulted in considerable damage, destroying furniture, cash, critical land documents, educational certificates, and other personal items.
Authorities have not officially determined the cause of the blaze, but early investigations suggest that assailants set fire to cloth stuffed in a room, resulting in the fire spreading quickly to nearby homes. Pirojpur Superintendent of Police, Mohammad Manzur Ahmed Siddiqui, visited the site and assured a thorough investigation to hold those responsible accountable.
This incident is part of a troubling surge in violence against religious minorities, particularly Hindus, in Bangladesh. According to a recent report by the Human Rights Congress for Bangladesh Minorities (HRCBM), there were 71 blasphemy-related incidents affecting Hindus across more than 30 districts from June to December this year, often accompanied by physical violence or legal repercussions followed by mob retaliation.
Experts and human rights activists say this unrest is fuelled by rising religious conservatism amid ongoing political instability. As Bangladesh, with roughly 175 million residents, faces increasing radicalism that capitalizes on anti-India sentiments, minorities are increasingly at risk of attacks. This trend has notably intensified as the nation approaches its upcoming elections.
Recent violent incidents include the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh and the murder of Hindu man Amrit Mondal in Rajbari on December 24. The government has disputed assertions of communal motivations in some cases, claiming unrelated criminal motives, yet the rising tide of assaults has alarmed human rights organizations and minority communities alike.
With national elections on the horizon, ensuring the rights and safety of minority groups remains a paramount concern, stressing the urgent need for political stability and protective measures for vulnerable populations in Bangladesh.
