Elon Musk, the tech entrepreneur behind Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI, has once again shared a bold prediction: in the near future, humans may no longer need to work. Speaking on Nikhil Kamath’s “People by WTF” podcast, Musk suggested that artificial intelligence (AI) and robotics could transform society so profoundly that work becomes a choice rather than a necessity.
“It may not be that far in the future. Maybe… less than 20 years, working will be optional. Working at all will be optional. It will be like a hobby, pretty much,” Musk said. He explained that advancements in AI and robotics could provide all goods and services humans desire, making labor a personal choice rather than an obligation.
Musk painted a picture where AI and robots handle nearly every task humans currently perform. “It will be if you can think of it, you can have it type of thing,” he added. According to him, AI will eventually reach a point where it has fulfilled all human needs and there is nothing left for it to do solely for human happiness. At that stage, Musk said, AI would operate independently, no longer constrained by human demands.
The billionaire also suggested that this technological revolution could make money less relevant. “If AI and robotics are big enough to satisfy all human needs, then the relevance of money declines dramatically,” Musk explained. He even proposed that energy production could become the new currency, reflecting a shift from monetary systems to resource-based wealth.
Musk has previously voiced similar ideas, claiming that AI and humanoid robots could eliminate poverty by making wealth and resources universally accessible. This futuristic vision, he believes, would create a world where humans can pursue hobbies, creativity, and personal interests instead of working to survive.
While Musk’s predictions may seem extraordinary, they reflect ongoing discussions in tech and economic circles about automation, universal basic income, and the long-term societal impact of AI. Whether his vision materializes within 10, 15, or 20 years, it sparks a conversation about the evolving relationship between humans, technology, and work.
