In a significant meeting aimed at bolstering bilateral ties, Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdel Atty met with Uganda’s Minister of International Relations, Henry Okello Oryem, to discuss crucial matters surrounding water security and economic collaboration.

Abdel Atty underscored the existential nature of water security for Egypt, emphasizing its critical role in the nation’s future. The two ministers engaged in a comprehensive dialogue regarding strategies to enhance their countries’ relationship, particularly in the realms of economic development and trade. They expressed mutual agreement on the necessity of expanding joint projects that would catalyze development in Uganda, particularly through increased Egyptian investments and the operation of Egyptian companies within the country.

The ministers identified several promising areas for deeper collaboration, including modern irrigation techniques, agriculture, construction, medical supplies, renewable energy initiatives, food production, and vaccine development for both humans and animals. Abdel Atty also conveyed Egypt’s willingness to share its expertise in electricity generation and to assist in managing invasive weed species in Lake Victoria and other Ugandan lakes.

To further solidify their partnership, the ministers agreed to convene a joint political consultation session that would involve Uganda's Ministers of Water, Environment, and Trade. This session will focus on addressing high-priority issues pertinent to both nations.

Additionally, the discussions included enhancing water management strategies and fostering cooperative projects within the Nile Basin to ensure that all countries in the Southern Nile Basin benefit equitably. Abdel Atty reiterated that for Egypt, water security remains a top priority, advocating for adherence to international laws and principles of cooperation, which include consensus-building, the obligation of no harm, and prior notification regarding water usage and management.

The meeting also touched on pressing regional concerns affecting East Africa, such as the ongoing conflicts in Sudan, Somalia, and the broader Horn of Africa. Abdel Atty reaffirmed Egypt's commitment to supporting Somalia’s sovereignty and institutional stability, calling for peaceful resolutions to the conflicts that continue to affect the region.

This collaborative dialogue between Egypt and Uganda signals a strengthening of partnerships aimed at addressing shared challenges and enhancing regional stability through mutual cooperation and development initiatives.
