Dubai's aviation community is abuzz following serious allegations against Air India, where a pilot was reportedly intoxicated before scheduled duty at Vancouver International Airport.
This incident unfolded on December 23, 2025, involving Flight AI186, intended for Delhi, with a route via Vienna. Just prior to takeoff, the flight faced delays as one crew member was abruptly deemed unfit for duty.
Air India verified that the pilot's removal came after inquiries from Canadian authorities regarding the individual's ability to operate the aircraft. Following this, local officials conducted further investigations.
In accordance with safety protocols, an alternate pilot was promptly assigned, leading to the delay. Air India expressed its apologies for the disruption caused to passengers and reaffirmed its commitment to cooperating fully with Canadian investigations.
A letter from Transport Canada, dated December 24, 2025, to Air India's senior management, indicated that the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) carried out two breathalyser tests confirming the pilot was under the influence, rendering them unfit for duty.
The regulator pointed out that this incident breaches Canadian Aviation Regulations, specifically CARs 602.02 and 602.03, and also flouts conditions outlined in Air India’s Foreign Air Operator Certificate.
Transport Canada and the RCMP are expected to pursue enforcement actions in response to the incident.
Air India announced that the implicated pilot has been grounded until further notice pending the investigation's outcome. The airline reiterated its strict zero-tolerance stance on safety violations, committing to rigorous disciplinary measures if these claims are validated.
This unfortunate incident has heightened concerns regarding pilot suitability checks and adherence to alcohol regulations for international airlines operating over Canadian airspace.
