Dubai Health has announced a significant 46% increase in kidney transplant procedures in 2025, reflecting rising community awareness about organ donation. A total of 73 successful kidney transplants were performed last year, up from 50 in 2024, as part of the National Programme for Donation and Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissue, known as ‘Hayat’.
The announcement coincides with World Kidney Day, observed annually on 12 March.
Dubai Health carries out these procedures through an integrated academic health system and in collaboration with federal, local, and private entities. Partners include the Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP), Dubai Health Authority, Dubai Healthcare City Authority, Dubai Airports, Dubai Corporation for Ambulance Services (DCAS), Dubai Police, Dubai Customs, Mediclinic City Hospital, and other private hospitals.
Dr. Mohamed Al Awadhi, Executive Director of Dubai Health Women and Children's Campus and Chair of Dubai Health Organ Donation and Transplantation Committee, said: “The increase in kidney transplants in 2025 reflects the UAE’s progress in raising awareness of organ donation, supported by Hayat and coordinated efforts across healthcare entities.”
Nujood AlKhloofi, Senior Director of the Organ Donation and Transplantation Program at Dubai Health, added: “The growth of Dubai’s kidney transplant programme shows the success of national organ donation initiatives, saving lives and improving patient quality of life.”
Role of Transplant Coordinators
Transplant coordinators play a crucial role in patient care. Maha Al Taher, Clinical Transplant Coordinator, explained that coordinators provide clinical guidance and compassionate support, managing medical records and ensuring smooth patient journeys from evaluation to placement on transplant waiting lists.
Dhai Abdulla Binjarn highlighted that coordinators guide patients through medical, social, and financial assessments, offering support at every step. For pediatric cases, Abdalazeez Alghraizat ensures children’s conditions are closely monitored while supporting families throughout the transplant process.
Community Support
Al Jalila Foundation, Dubai Health’s philanthropic arm, supports patients financially through its ‘Your Donation Saves Lives’ programme, ensuring access to essential transplant treatments.
Education and Training
Mohammed Bin Rashid University of Medicine and Health Sciences (MBRU) advances organ transplantation through specialized training programs such as the Adult Nephrology Fellowship and ‘Core Skills in Organ Donation’. MBRU also conducts research to improve best practices in transplant care.
Dubai Health’s integrated efforts, combined with community support and professional training, continue to strengthen organ donation and transplant services, improving patient access and outcomes across the UAE.
