Mette Frederiksen, Prime Minister of Denmark, cautioned that the NATO alliance would unravel if the United States attempted a military takeover of Greenland. This warning comes after remarks from President Donald Trump indicating Washington's intent to assume control over the Arctic territory.

Frederiksen emphasized that an assault by one NATO member on another would dismantle the underpinnings of the alliance, jeopardizing decades of collective security established post-World War II. As a semi-autonomous territory of Denmark, Greenland falls under NATO's protective umbrella through its Danish affiliation.

Trump has reignited his longstanding interest in Greenland, promising discussions on the topic in the upcoming weeks. He has consistently maintained that Greenland is vital for US national security and has not dismissed the possibility of using military force to secure the area.

Tensions heightened following the appointment of a senior US official advocating for annexation as a special envoy to Greenland. Additionally, a controversial image circulated online, showcasing Greenland adorned in US national colors, insinuating prospective American dominance.

Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen condemned this imagery as disrespectful and disregarding Greenland’s political identity and rights. However, he reassured citizens that the territory is not for sale, asserting that its future will be decided by its own people, not outside influences.

Strategically located between Europe and North America, Greenland is crucial for missile defense initiatives, with its extensive mineral wealth becoming increasingly valuable as global powers strive to lessen dependency on foreign resources. The US has expressed alarm over the rising presence of Russian and Chinese forces in the Arctic.

Despite escalating tensions, Greenland's leaders are focused on tempering anxieties, insisting that there’s currently no threat of military occupation and affirming that international law stands firmly in favor of Greenland.

Both Denmark and Greenland have reiterated that mutual cooperation, rather than coercion, is the only viable approach moving forward, warning that any forced alteration of Greenland's status could profoundly impact global security and NATO's future.
