Delhi, one of the most polluted metropolises globally, has enacted stringent measures to address deteriorating air quality that has recently reached alarming levels. On Wednesday, officials declared restrictions on vehicles, construction operations, and office presence to curb pollution and safeguard public health.

The air quality index (AQI) in Delhi, which accommodates 30 million residents, has lingered in the 'severe' category for several days, frequently exceeding 450. The combination of thick fog and heavy pollution has impaired visibility, impacting flights, train services, and daily commuting.

In response, the Commission for Air Quality Management activated stage four of the Graded Response Action Plan—the highest alert level—for Delhi and neighboring regions. This stage implements various restrictions aimed at curtailing emissions and mitigating outdoor pollution.

Among the new regulations, older diesel trucks that fail to meet updated emission standards are prohibited from entering the city. Ongoing construction works, including public projects, have been paused temporarily. Schools have adopted hybrid class formats, while both private and public offices will function at a 50 percent capacity, with the remainder of staff continuing their work from home.

To assist daily-wage construction workers affected by these disruptions, the government has announced compensation of 10,000 rupees ($110) for each individual.

“Our government is dedicated to ensuring clean air in Delhi. We will implement rigorous measures in the following days,” stated Manjinder Singh Sirsa, the Environment Minister of Delhi.

Winter pollution is a recurring challenge in Delhi and nearby areas. The cold, dense air traps smoke from vehicles, construction activities, and agricultural burning from adjacent states, resulting in some of the highest pollution levels globally. Experts caution that such elevated pollution exposes residents to significant respiratory and cardiovascular threats.

Authorities aspire that the newly initiated measures will effectively diminish emissions and offer relief to the citizens, while also enhancing awareness about the necessity for sustainable solutions to Delhi's ongoing air pollution dilemma.
