Arvind Kejriwal's Judicial Custody Extended Till April 23 in Money Laundering Case Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal, arrested on March 21 in connection with a money laundering case linked to the now-scrapped liquor policy, had his judicial custody extended until April 23 by a Delhi court on Monday.

Kejriwal appeared virtually before Special Judge Kaveri Baweja of the Rouse Avenue Courts as his previous custody expired. The court cited the simultaneous conclusion of the judicial custody of co-accused BRS leader K Kavitha as the reason for extending Kejriwal's custody.

In a legal maneuver, Kejriwal approached the Supreme Court challenging a Delhi High Court ruling that upheld his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and subsequent remand in the excise policy case.

The High Court's dismissal of Kejriwal's plea for release and its rejection of his claims of political vendetta amid the Lok Sabha elections on April 9 stirred controversy. The court emphasized Kejriwal's failure to respond to nine ED summons over six months, undermining his assertion of special privilege as Chief Minister.

Kejriwal's appeal against the High Court's decision argues the lack of substantive evidence in the possession of the Enforcement Directorate to infer guilt under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) Section 19. The arrest, Kejriwal contends, was solely based on contradictory and belated statements of co-accused turned approvers.

The ED arrested Kejriwal as part of a money laundering probe related to alleged irregularities in the Delhi excise policy for 2021-22, which has since been annulled.

As legal battles unfold, Kejriwal's case continues to draw attention and scrutiny, highlighting the intersection of politics, law, and governance in the Indian capital.
