On Saturday, Uttarakhand Police arrested Abdul Malik, the prime accused in the February 8 violence in Haldwani, from Delhi. Police spokesperson Nilesh Anand Bharne confirmed the arrest. The violence occurred during a demolition drive by the administration on a mosque and madrasa allegedly on Nazool land in Banbhoolpura. Five were killed, and over a dozen injured. Chief Minister Pushkar Dhami issued shoot-on-sight orders as the mob surrounded the police station, pelting stones and torching cars. The mosque and madrasa, managed by Malik, were at the center of the violence. Haldwani Municipal Corporation served Malik a notice demanding Rs 2.44 crore for government property damage. The demolition triggered unrest, starting with stone-pelting at 5:30 pm, escalating to arson and police station siege. Reinforcements brought the situation under control by 9 pm.
