A devastating series of flash floods have resulted in at least 14 fatalities across various regions of North Sulawesi, Indonesia, as confirmed by local officials on Tuesday. This calamity struck Siau Island, part of the Siau Tagulandang Biaro administrative region, following a prolonged bout of heavy rainfall that began early Monday morning.
Emergency management authorities report that relentless rainfall led to riverbanks and drainage systems overflowing, quickly inundating residential areas. The rapidly rising floodwaters caught many residents off guard, transforming streets into perilous torrents and resulting in damage to homes and loss of life.
In response, emergency teams have been dispatched to facilitate search, rescue, and evacuation operations. As of Tuesday, efforts remain vigorous, with 16 trained rescuers actively engaged in locating survivors using both boats and on-ground searches. Four individuals remain unaccounted for as search operations proceed, hampered by challenging terrain and hazardous conditions.
The floods have also left 18 people injured, with medical evaluations underway at local health facilities. Many families are displaced, prompting the establishment of temporary shelters to provide necessary safety, food, and support.
Local authorities are assessing the damage to homes, roads, and public infrastructure. Preliminary reports suggest significant impact in lower-lying areas, although a complete assessment is pending.
Residents, particularly in vulnerable and low-lying areas, have been urged to stay alert as additional rainfall is anticipated. Officials caution that further precipitation may heighten the risk of additional flash floods and landslides. Disaster response teams remain on standby to address any escalation in the situation.
