A heated debate erupted Thursday at the Ontario legislature as Premier Doug Ford faced scrutiny regarding his administration's commitment to students and educators. Interim Liberal Leader John Fraser urged Ford to endorse a $1 billion boost in education funding and the hiring of 10,000 additional support staff to better school environments. In response, Ford criticized previous Liberal administrations for shutting down around 600 institutions and laying off teachers, a remark he later retracted under pressure.
Following the exchange, Fraser labeled Ford’s comments as “wacko,” claiming they demonstrated a misunderstanding of the current challenges schools are facing. Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner also chimed in, denouncing Ford's portrayal of teachers as “left-wing radicals”, asserting that such statements only widen the gaps instead of tackling real educational issues.
Concerns raised by parents at Heydon Park Secondary School, a Toronto institution for students with special needs, further heightened the discourse. Attendees of the debate sought clarification regarding the pause on Grade 9 and Grade 10 admissions, fearing that a combination of dwindling enrollment and lack of communication could lead to the school's eventual closure. Some parents cited low EQAO test scores for special needs students, emphasizing the need for better support systems over diminished opportunities.
NDP Finance Critic Jessica Bell asserted that specialized schools like Heydon Park are vital and require ongoing government investment for the success of their students. However, Government House Leader Steve Clark countered, stating that the province's strategy is centered on providing necessary resources for parents, students, and educators.
Acknowledging the disappointing EQAO performance, Education Minister Paul Calandra stated that two new members will join an advisory board early next year to evaluate Ontario's standardized testing framework and propose enhancements.
