Colombo, Sri Lanka – A large march and rally were held in Borella, Colombo, to show solidarity with the Palestinian people. The event, attended by citizens from different communities, highlighted Sri Lanka’s longstanding support for humanitarian causes and international peace.

The march began at Borella Cemetery Junction and proceeded to Campbell Field, Borella, with participants carrying banners and placards advocating for peace and humanitarian relief. Temporary road closures were in place to accommodate the large turnout.

At Campbell Field, representatives from political, religious, and civil society organizations addressed the crowd, emphasizing unity and the importance of supporting humanitarian efforts for affected communities worldwide.

Background and Purpose

The ongoing humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip has drawn global attention. Sri Lanka, having experienced the challenges of conflict in its own history, has consistently expressed support for peaceful resolutions and the protection of civilians. Organizers of the march stressed the event’s aim was to raise awareness of humanitarian needs in the region and call for international support and cooperation.

Diverse Participation and Messages of Unity

The event saw participation from people of different faiths, including Muslims, Buddhists, Christians, and Hindus, demonstrating national unity for a humanitarian cause. Many participants shared a strong desire to highlight the suffering of children and families affected by ongoing conflict.

Key speakers included:

  • MP Najith Indika: “Sri Lanka recognizes the importance of supporting peace and humanitarian relief. We stand for justice and for the protection of all civilians affected by conflict.”

  • Deputy Speaker Rizvi Salli: “Regardless of political or religious differences, we aim to raise awareness and work through diplomatic channels to support humanitarian efforts. Our priority is the protection of human life and the promotion of peace.”

  • Venerable Veya Kandawala Rahula Thero: Emphasized the role of religious leaders in advocating for justice and supporting humanitarian initiatives.

  • Suwasthika Arulingam, United Lankans for Palestine: Highlighted the importance of prioritizing humanitarian values above all, stressing that support for affected communities must remain a focus even amid domestic challenges.

International Solidarity

The rally reflected Sri Lanka’s commitment to global humanitarian principles and the protection of civilian lives during conflicts. Organizers and participants expressed hope that international attention and diplomatic efforts can contribute to alleviating human suffering.

The event in Colombo demonstrates widespread support for humanitarian relief and reinforces Sri Lanka’s longstanding commitment to peace, justice, and the protection of human life.
