An IndiGo flight from Tbilisi to Delhi narrowly escaped entering Iranian airspace just before Iran unexpectedly shut its skies amid rising tensions. This abrupt closure has led to significant disruptions in international flight schedules, compelling airlines to cancel or reroute numerous flights.

Flight data indicates that IndiGo flight 6E1808 flew over Iran at around 2:35 am on Thursday, just minutes prior to the airspace's closure at 3 am. It is believed to have been the final non-Iranian passenger flight within Iranian airspace before authorities issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM), halting the majority of flight operations. A few designated international flights were still permitted to operate.

The airspace was reportedly closed for over four hours, per Iran’s aviation guidance. Given Iran's strategic location for east-west air travel, the shutdown had immediate repercussions for global aviation, with many flights being diverted north or south to bypass Iranian airspace. By 7 am, the skies began to reopen, allowing some domestic flights to resume.

Historically, Iran has limited its airspace during conflicts, including during a 12-day war in June with Israel and in related military exchanges involving the Israel-Hamas conflict. While no active military actions are reported currently, the closure has raised fears about potential security risks, missile activity, and the risk of civilian flights being misidentified.

Indian carriers faced notable disruptions. Air India has canceled several early flights, including those from Delhi to New York JFK, Newark, and Mumbai. Meanwhile, IndiGo’s Baku-Delhi flight was forced to return after spending less than an hour in the air due to the altered route. SpiceJet also confirmed it had rerouted some flights for safety reasons.

Air India has stated that while rerouting is being attempted wherever feasible, flights lacking safe alternatives have been canceled. IndiGo and SpiceJet have reinforced that ensuring the safety of passengers and crew is their utmost priority and recommend travelers check their flight status online.

Other international airlines, including Lufthansa, have likewise modified their operations, steering clear of Iranian and Iraqi airspace until further notice and mid-route changes for flights to Tel Aviv and Amman. This disruption highlights the pivotal role Iran's airspace plays in global aviation, particularly during periods of crisis.
