The Philippine Coast Guard has reported that three Filipino fishermen sustained injuries and two vessels were notably damaged after confrontations with Chinese coast guard ships that utilized water cannons near a disputed shoal in the South China Sea.

This occurrence unfolded on Friday close to Sabina Shoal, where roughly twenty Philippine fishing boats were active. Manila noted that Chinese ships also employed blockading tactics and severed anchor lines, endangering the fishermen.

“We urge the Chinese Coast Guard to adhere to globally accepted conduct standards and prioritize the safety of lives at sea, rather than take aggressive enforcement actions that jeopardize innocent fishermen,” stated the Philippine coast guard.

China’s embassy in Manila has yet to respond to inquiries. Meanwhile, the Chinese coast guard mentioned on Friday that it had successfully driven away several Philippine vessels, which Philippine officials interpreted as an acknowledgment of misconduct. “This confession of wrongdoing impacts ordinary Filipino fishermen profoundly,” remarked coast guard spokesperson Jay Tarriela.

The Philippine coast guard dispatched boats to aid the injured fishermen, although they encountered repeated interruptions from Chinese vessels. Despite these complications, rescuers managed to reach the fishermen, offering medical help and essential supplies.

Sabina Shoal, known as Escoda Shoal in the Philippines and Xianbin Reef in China, is located within the Philippine exclusive economic zone, approximately 150 km (95 miles) west of Palawan. China asserts claims over vast portions of the South China Sea, a vital shipping channel valued at over $3 trillion per year, overlapping with the exclusive economic zones of several Southeast Asian nations.

In 2016, an international tribunal concluded that China's expansive claims hold no legal validity. Despite this, China has rejected the verdict and continues to maintain control over large areas of the South China Sea, often encountering disputes with fishing and naval vessels from neighboring countries.

This latest event accentuates the escalating tensions in the region, where fishermen frequently endure perilous situations due to conflicting territorial claims. The Philippine government reiterates the importance of maintaining peace and following international maritime laws to protect its citizens.
