Chinese airlines have dramatically slashed their December flight operations to Japan, resulting in the cancellation of more than 900 flights as diplomatic tensions escalate over the Taiwan issue. This sudden reduction has sent ripples of concern through Japan's aviation and tourism industries, which are heavily reliant on Chinese tourists.
Data from Cirium, referenced by Nikkei Asia, reveals that there are 176 regular routes linking Japan with China, connecting 20 Japanese airports to 36 in China, excluding Hong Kong and Macau. As of Thursday morning, Chinese airlines have already canceled 904 flights out of the 5,548 originally scheduled for December—representing nearly 16%. This is a sharp increase from the 268 cancellations noted just two days earlier, highlighting the rapidly evolving situation.
Kansai Airport faces the most significant impact, with a loss of 626 inbound flights, including 80 from Nanjing, 71 from Shanghai, and 58 from Beijing. Tokyo's Narita Airport and Nagoya's Chubu Airport report 68 cancellations each, while New Chitose Airport in Hokkaido noted 61.
Okinawa’s Naha Airport recorded 26 cancellations while Tokyo’s Haneda Airport experienced the least disruption, with merely seven cancellations out of its 989 planned inbound flights.
Major carriers like China Southern Airlines and China Eastern Airlines have canceled 118 and 109 flights, respectively. However, the deepest cuts appear to be by mid-sized carriers based in Shanghai, with Spring Airlines cutting 182 flights and Juneyao Airlines eliminating 166 flights from their schedules.
The significant drop in demand has led to a decrease in ticket prices. Japan's low-cost airline comparison site, Ena, indicates that round-trip fares between Kansai and Shanghai this December have plummeted from about 20,000 yen last year to approximately 8,500 yen this year.
Fujii Naoki, president of Narita International Airport Corporation, confirmed that several Chinese airlines have warned of impending service reductions starting in December. He anticipates that around 10–20% of the nearly 300 weekly flights connecting Narita and various Chinese cities could face cancellations.
Economists stress the importance of monitoring these developments. Kanda Keiji, a senior economist at the Daiwa Institute of Research, remarked to Nikkei Asia that it is uncertain how China will adjust its aviation strategy in the near term, indicating that “future developments will need to be closely watched.”
With rising tensions, the ramifications for travel, tourism, and economic relations between Japan and China are expected to become more pronounced in the upcoming months.
