In a significant event at Government House on Thursday, Zhang Jianwei, the Chinese Ambassador to Thailand, delivered 20 million yuan (approximately $2.8 million) in humanitarian assistance to Thailand after a tragic crane collapse on the Thai-Chinese high-speed rail project in Nakhon Ratchasima.
The aid comprises 10 million yuan ($1.4 million) in cash along with an equivalent value in relief supplies, which Prime Minister and Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul graciously accepted. Prime Minister Anutin expressed profound gratitude, emphasizing that this gesture embodies the “brotherly bond” and deep-seated trust shared between Thailand and China.
Ambassador Zhang conveyed Beijing's heartfelt condolences over the disaster, which involved a construction crane collapsing onto a passenger train, resulting in multiple casualties. He assured that strict directives have been issued to involved companies, mandating full cooperation with Thai investigations and transparency throughout the process.
The ambassador reiterated that the high-speed rail initiative is pivotal to the Thailand-China partnership, highlighting that safety has now become the utmost priority for all participants.
Additionally, the meeting served as a platform to discuss further economic collaboration. Prime Minister Anutin accentuated the need for China to expedite the purchase of 500,000 tonnes of Thai rice, a commitment initially made with President Xi Jinping. Ambassador Zhang expressed optimism, assuring that China aims to fulfill the import objectives within the year.
Tourism was another significant agenda item, with both leaders pledging to implement strategies to boost Chinese tourism to Thailand, aiding the nation’s economic recovery and growth.
The discussions underscored the commitment of both countries to enhance relations, ensure project safety, and expand trade and tourism collaboration, even in the wake of a recent tragedy.
