Colin Harischandra – Colombo, Sri Lanka

On 25 July 2025, a significant moment in Sri Lanka’s legal history took place when the 48th Chief Justice, Hon. Murdu Fernando, delivered her farewell speech at a special ceremony held at the Supreme Court. Her retirement marks the end of a legal career that spanned more than 45 years.

Chief Justice Fernando’s farewell address was not just about her own journey—it was a powerful reminder of the core values of the judiciary. She emphasized the importance of protecting democracy, upholding the rule of law, and maintaining the highest ethical standards. “Violating judicial ethics is an unforgivable sin,” she said, highlighting the serious responsibility carried by judges and legal professionals.

A Journey of Dedication and Service

Chief Justice Fernando began her career as a law student nearly 45 years ago. She joined the Attorney General’s Department in 1985 as a Government Counsel, where she gained valuable experience in criminal and civil law. In 1997, she became Deputy Solicitor General, a senior role that reflected her growing leadership and legal expertise.

Her strong reputation led to her appointment as a Supreme Court judge in March 2018. During her time on the bench, she became known for her detailed legal reasoning and focus on fairness and justice. Her decisions helped shape Sri Lanka’s legal system and were often praised for their clarity and insight.

On 2 December 2024, she was sworn in as the 48th Chief Justice of Sri Lanka. In this role, she not only led the court but also helped manage the entire judicial system. She was responsible for ensuring that the courts remained independent, efficient, and trusted by the public.

Upholding the Constitution and Legal Ethics

In her farewell speech, Chief Justice Fernando said that the Supreme Court plays a vital role in protecting democracy and upholding the Constitution. She called on all members of the judiciary to stay true to the values of honesty, independence, and integrity.

Her words serve as a strong message to current and future judges to stay committed to justice and avoid any compromise in ethics or fairness.

A Lasting Legacy

Throughout her career, Chief Justice Murdu Fernando earned the respect of her colleagues, legal experts, and the public. Her journey from law student to Chief Justice is seen as an inspiring example of dedication, hard work, and public service.

Her legacy will be remembered for strengthening the rule of law and for reminding the judiciary of its duty to serve the people with integrity and fairness.
