Several areas of Chennai, including Adyar, Meenambakkam, and Nandanam, received substantial rainfall on Tuesday night, with each area recording around 6 cm of rain. The weather system causing this downpour, a low-pressure area over the southwest Bay of Bengal, has continued to affect Tamil Nadu, particularly the coastal regions and the city of Chennai, as it draws closer to the coast. This system is expected to bring even more heavy rainfall to Tamil Nadu's central and southern districts.
The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had already issued a yellow alert on November 12 for 12 districts due to the heavy rainfall and extended it to 17 districts for November 13 and 25 districts for November 15. According to the IMD’s latest bulletin, isolated heavy rainfall is anticipated in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry from November 13 to 16, with the possibility of thunderstorms and lightning. Wind speeds of up to 55 km/h are also expected to occur over several parts of the state.
Despite the rainfall, schools and colleges in Chennai will remain open on both Wednesday and Thursday. However, certain districts have been forced to declare holidays due to the intensity of the rain. In districts like Perambalur, Ariyalur, and Cuddalore, schools were shut down as the rain continued to affect daily life. Mayiladuthurai district also closed its schools and colleges for the day as a precautionary measure.

The weather forecast indicates that coastal districts, stretching from Chennai to Ramanathapuram, will continue to experience heavy rainfall. The rainfall is expected to intensify on Wednesday and spread to other nearby regions by Thursday. Thunderstorms are also likely to persist, further impacting the area.
Tamil Nadu's state government is fully prepared for the ongoing rains, with Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin reassuring the public that the state has ramped up its preparedness following the lessons learned from previous downpours in October. According to Stalin, the government has deployed additional resources, including an increased number of motor pumps and super sucker machines. A total of 1,194 motor pumps and 152 super sucker machines have been positioned strategically across the city, with the number of placements up by 21% compared to October’s preparations. This proactive approach aims to mitigate the effects of the ongoing and expected rainfall.
As the state braces for continued heavy showers, residents are urged to stay updated on weather warnings and take necessary precautions against the potential impacts of flooding and stormy weather.
