ChatGPT is stepping into the world of payments in India, promising a future where you could order groceries, pay bills, or send money without leaving a chat. India’s National Payments Corporation (NPCI), in collaboration with Razorpay and OpenAI, has begun testing a system that allows users to complete transactions directly through ChatGPT, using the country’s trusted UPI platform.
The pilot is designed to make payments seamless. Imagine typing, “Buy my usual BigBasket order,” and ChatGPT presenting your shopping cart, confirming the total, and processing the payment — all inside the chat. The system requires explicit approval for every transaction, ensuring safety and user control. Razorpay manages the backend and merchant integration, while NPCI provides the secure UPI infrastructure.

BigBasket has joined as an early partner, showcasing how conversational AI could handle everyday shopping. Users can browse past orders, confirm selections, and make payments without being redirected to other apps or websites. Transactions trigger the standard UPI authentication prompts, keeping security intact.
This move reflects India’s unique fintech ecosystem, where UPI already handles billions of transactions each month. By combining this with AI, payments become faster, smoother, and potentially smarter — ChatGPT could even suggest purchases based on your previous activity.
The pilot is currently limited to small-ticket transactions, with plans to expand to utilities, travel, and more in the future. If successful, India could become the first country where AI agents can transact natively on a public payment network, offering a new level of convenience for users and businesses alike.
As the system rolls out gradually, it could redefine how Indians interact with money online, turning conversational AI from a virtual assistant into a practical, everyday commerce tool.
