A devastating incident unfolded at a waste management facility in Cebu City when a significant mound of garbage suddenly caved in, trapping several workers beneath a massive pile of debris. This tragic event has resulted in one confirmed fatality, multiple injuries, and an unknown number of individuals still unaccounted for, as reported by local authorities.
The collapse transpired at a landfill situated in the Binaliw area, prompting emergency teams to work tirelessly throughout the night to rescue those entrapped. At least eight individuals were successfully rescued, but sadly, a female worker succumbed to her injuries while en route to the hospital. Additional workers have sustained injuries and are currently receiving treatment.
There have been inconsistent reports regarding the actual number of missing individuals. While police initially indicated that at least 27 workers were still trapped, officials later suggested that the figure may be even higher. The ongoing rescue operations face challenges due to poor communication and a lack of clear information from the site.
Mayor Nestor Archival has reassured the community, stating that all emergency services are activated and adhering to strict safety protocols. He highlighted the administration's dedication to transparency, accountability, and support for the affected families.
The landfill, managed by a private waste management company, handles approximately 1,000 tons of garbage each day and has a workforce exceeding 100 employees. Reports indicate that several office and administrative buildings at the site were crushed as a result of the collapsing waste pile, which was roughly equivalent in height to a four-story structure.
Despite dry weather conditions at the time, the precise cause of the collapse is still under investigation. An emergency meeting involving city officials and the landfill's management has been convened to evaluate the situation and plan the way forward.
Rescue teams are diligently working through the rubble in hopes of discovering survivors, while families remain on edge, awaiting news about their loved ones.
