In Cebu City, Philippines, a catastrophic landfill collapse has resulted in the loss of 11 lives, as confirmed by local authorities. The disastrous event unfolded last week at the Binaliw landfill, where over 100 workers were on-site when the accident occurred.

Rescue teams have successfully rescued 12 injured individuals from the rubble, but more than 20 workers remain unaccounted for, leaving families in desperate anticipation of news.

Despite initial fears that survival chances were slim after several days buried under debris, rescuers identified signs of life during their efforts on Monday. Cebu City Mayor Nestor Archival emphasized that authorities are devoted to the rescue mission and have not yet transitioned to recovery operations.

The incident has ignited widespread calls for responsibility and reform in waste management practices. Environmental authorities have mandated an immediate halt to operations at the site, which is managed by Prime Integrated Waste Solutions, Inc., and have requested a comprehensive compliance and corrective plan within 90 days.

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has initiated a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the collapse, with promises to hold accountable those found responsible. Lawmakers are also advocating for a nationwide review of waste management protocols and the safety standards for landfill employees.

Residents near the landfill recounted harrowing experiences during the incident. One resident, whose wife was among those working at the site, described hearing a sudden “explosion” of trash, followed by chaotic attempts to escape. Tragically, he later confirmed that his wife’s body was recovered.

The Binaliw landfill spans roughly 20 hectares, with around three hectares in active use for dumping waste. While the cause of the collapse is still being investigated, initial reports suggest that persistent rainfall may have contributed to the weight and instability of the refuse, possibly alongside engineering faults.

Landfills are a prevalent method of waste disposal across major Philippine cities, including Cebu, which is a critical economic and transportation hub in the Visayas. This tragedy has sparked renewed discussions about existing safety hazards and the pressing need for comprehensive regulations to avert future disasters.
