A powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake tore through central Philippines on Wednesday, leaving a trail of destruction across Cebu province. The death toll has climbed to 69 lives lost with more than 150 people injured, and rescuers warn the numbers could rise as collapsed buildings are searched.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) confirmed the quake’s epicentre was just 17 kilometres northeast of Bogo City, a coastal hub of nearly 90,000 people. Triggered by a local fault line, the quake rattled homes, cracked roads, and flattened structures, leaving residents shaken and afraid to return indoors.
In Bogo, one of the hardest-hit areas, at least 14 people died. A landslide in a nearby mountain village buried makeshift homes under rocks and earth, where rescuers struggled through unstable terrain. The local hospital reported being overwhelmed as victims streamed in with broken bones, head injuries, and trauma from falling debris.

Neighboring towns also faced tragedy. In San Remigio, six casualties were confirmed, including three coast guard officers, a firefighter, and a young child. With water systems damaged, officials appealed urgently for clean water, food, and relief supplies.
Witnesses described the violent shaking. Firefighter Rey Caete recalled how his team staggered to the ground when the quake struck, their fire station wall collapsing around them. "The ground moved so strong, we could barely stand," he said.
Hundreds of frightened families refused to return to their cracked homes, spending the night in open fields. Shops and businesses reported heavy damage, while in Daanbantayan, a historic Roman Catholic church was reduced to rubble.
For a brief period, residents feared a tsunami after the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology issued a coastal warning. It was later lifted when no unusual waves were recorded. Still, the quake left lasting scars: uprooted trees, flooded streets, and power outages that forced thousands into evacuation centres.
Cebu’s governor warned that the true scale of devastation is still being assessed, and across the province, the mood remained sombre. With lives lost, homes shattered, and memories buried under rubble, residents now face the painful task of rebuilding.
