A Canadian MP has firmly denounced the rampant violence in Bangladesh under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus. The nation is experiencing a troubling surge in attacks targeting minority groups, particularly Hindus, almost a year following the political upheaval that saw the ousting of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
Shuvaloy Majumdar, who serves as a Member of Parliament and a human rights advocate, described the recent acts of mob violence as shocking and profoundly unsettling. He pointed to the brutal lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, whose death and the subsequent desecration of his body have sparked widespread anger. Notably, the victim's family learned of the incident via social media, highlighting a significant failure in state responsibilities.
Majumdar stressed that incidents of violence are indicative of a broader trend targeting minorities and political dissenters since the political shift. Rather than seeing a decrease, hostility and violence have escalated, resulting in horrific events like public lynchings.
The MP questioned the governance and accountability of the interim administration, asserting the need for clearer leadership. He cautioned that conducting free and fair elections amidst such intense violence—especially with the prohibition of key political parties—will be a daunting task.
Majumdar also connected the current crisis to the historical trauma of the 1971 liberation war, suggesting that persistent extremist attitudes continue to weaken Bangladesh's institutions. He raised alarms about rising attacks on press freedoms and liberal voices, indicating a worrying surge in religious fundamentalism that threatens the nation’s secular principles.
He called upon the international community to take a decisive stance and address the underlying causes of this violence, ensuring the protection of all citizens, irrespective of their religious affiliations.
