Canada Enters EU Defence Initiative as First Non-European Partner

Canada has made history by becoming the inaugural non-European nation to join the European Union’s €150-billion ($170 billion) defence programme, SAFE. Prime Minister Mark Carney indicated that this milestone would create “incredible opportunities” for Canadian defence firms while addressing essential capability deficits within European security.

Launched this year, SAFE aims to bolster EU defence preparedness by 2030. The initiative emphasizes critical sectors such as missile systems, artillery, drones, cyber warfare, air and missile defence, maritime security, and safeguarding space assets. While collaborative initiatives typically necessitate at least 65 percent of components be sourced from the EU, partner nations like Canada could be granted exceptions.

Carney pointed out that joining SAFE is part of Canada’s broader vision to diversify its military procurement and lessening dependency on the United States, especially following recent trade frictions. Discussions regarding the UK’s participation in SAFE concluded last week without success, attributed mainly to differences over financial contributions.

Canada’s involvement in SAFE is likely to fortify transatlantic defence connections, open avenues for Canadian suppliers, and draw European investments into the nation’s defence industry.
