Heavy rainstorms across California have resulted in severe flooding and mudslides, claiming the lives of at least three individuals as reported on Christmas night.

This potent storm system, predicted to linger through Friday, has unleashed up to 11 inches of rain in certain areas of Los Angeles County. The torrential downpour has led to evacuations, roads submerged, and several major highways closed. Emergency responders have conducted numerous rescues, including individuals trapped in vehicles as floodwaters rose swiftly.

Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency on Wednesday for Los Angeles and several other counties in Southern California as conditions worsened. By Thursday evening, nearly 100,000 residents throughout the state were without power.

Meteorologists warned that the threat was far from over, with the US Weather Prediction Center alerting that flash flooding incidents were highly likely, as rising water levels could overwhelm streams and rivers.

Authorities confirmed the deaths of a 64-year-old man in San Diego, who died due to a falling tree, and a 74-year-old man in Redding, whose vehicle was overtaken by floodwaters as police attempted a rescue. Earlier that week, a woman in her 70s died after being swept into the ocean along the Mendocino County coast by a powerful wave.

Evacuation orders were issued in portions of San Bernardino County, while sections of the San Francisco Bay Area faced flash flood warnings. The region was battered by strong winds, with gusts exceeding 100 miles per hour near San Jose.

In areas near Los Angeles, such as Altadena, flooding has exacerbated mudslides in regions previously affected by wildfires, where burned land struggles to absorb the sudden deluge. City officials have advised residents to exercise caution, especially during the busy holiday travel season.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass declared a local emergency, urging residents to avoid unnecessary travel as the storm continues to pose significant hazards.

Meteorologists indicated that this extreme weather event is being driven by several atmospheric rivers, pulling substantial moisture from tropical areas and amplifying rainfall during one of the year's peak travel weeks.
