Over 1000 BYD Cars Seized in Sri Lanka Over Engine Power Dispute Shocker

A major stir has erupted in the automobile industry after Sri Lanka’s Customs Department seized a large consignment of China-manufactured BYD ATTO 3 electric vehicles. According to current information, more than 1,000 vehicles have been detained at Colombo Port, with alleged discrepancies in the engine capacity being cited as the primary reason behind the move.

How Did the Issue Begin?

The controversy began when a Sri Lankan Member of Parliament claimed in Parliament that the declared engine capacity of the BYD ATTO 3 was 100 kilowatts (kW), whereas the actual capacity could be 150 kW. This difference is significant because vehicle taxes in Sri Lanka are determined based on engine capacity.

Reportedly, a vehicle with 100 kW capacity incurs a tax of around 2.4 million Sri Lankan Rupees, whereas a 150 kW vehicle could be taxed nearly 5.4 million Rupees. If this discrepancy proves true, it could lead to a substantial loss in government revenue.

Following this statement, Sri Lankan Customs officials launched an investigation and temporarily halted the clearance of all related vehicles.

Source of Information and Need for Investigation

According to available information, the statement was based on data provided by a public relations (PR) agency involved in promoting automobile brands. However, the accuracy and transparency of this technical data are now under scrutiny.

Many experts believe that formal verification and fact-checking are essential before sharing such technical information publicly to avoid confusion in the market.

Impact on Sri Lanka’s EV Market

BYD is currently one of the rapidly growing brands in Sri Lanka’s electric vehicle (EV) sector. The seizure of these cars has not only raised concerns among consumers but could also result in significant financial losses for importers.

If the situation continues, it could impact both the demand for and the trust in electric vehicles in Sri Lanka. Additionally, there is speculation that the government may introduce new rules and procedures for EV imports in light of this development.

Economic and Legal Aspects

The economic impact of this event goes beyond tax revenue. It could place financial pressure on importers, while consumers may face delays in receiving their vehicles.

If the investigation uncovers any legal violations, the Sri Lankan government may take appropriate legal action against the involved entities.

This could also affect international trade relations and investor confidence in the country.

Consumer Trust and Future Preparedness

The most significant impact in such cases is on consumer trust. Buyers expect that any vehicle they purchase complies with all legal and technical standards.

Going forward, it is essential that:

  • All technical specifications be independently verified,

  • No information be released without proper investigation, especially amid political or commercial competition, and

  • PR agencies and brands maintain transparency and accuracy.

The questions surrounding the engine capacity of BYD vehicles have now become the subject of a broader investigation. The Sri Lankan Customs Department is continuing its probe, and upcoming official reports will provide further clarity on the matter.

For the government, business entities, and consumers alike, this is a critical moment to prioritize caution, verification, and transparency in the future. DXB News Network will closely follow all official updates and findings related to this issue.
