Borussia Dortmund hire ex-Bayern coach Niko Kovac until 2026

Niko Kovac is now the new coach of Borussia Dortmund. The club’s sports director, Lars Ricken, shared this. Kovac, who is 53 years old, has signed a contract to stay with the team until 2026.

Kovac will take the place of Nuri Sahin, who lost his job last week. After that, Mike Tullberg was the temporary coach. After Dortmund won 3-1 against Shakhtar Donetsk, Ricken said, "We have made a deal with Kovac." He also said that Tullberg will coach the team for their next match on Saturday against Heidenheim. Kovac will start working from Sunday.

Earlier, reports said that Dortmund and Kovac had already talked and agreed. Kovac did not want a short-term job. He asked for a contract till 2026. His last job was with Wolfsburg, but he left in March 2024. Before that, he was the coach of Eintracht Frankfurt, where he helped the team win the German Cup (DFB Pokal) in 2018 by beating Bayern Munich. After that, Bayern Munich made him their coach. In the 2018-19 season, he won both the Bundesliga title and the German Cup. But in the next season, Bayern removed him because of bad results.

Kovac is known for his strict coaching and focus on player fitness. He makes sure his players work hard and stay in good shape. Dortmund is having a difficult season, even though they played in the Champions League final last year. Right now, they are in 11th place in the Bundesliga and are 22 points behind Bayern Munich. They have won only one of their last eight league games. With Kovac as their new coach, Dortmund hopes to improve and play better. Fans are waiting to see if he can bring success to the team.
