A man accused of firing at a Jewish Hanukkah event in Sydney's Bondi Beach has been charged with 59 offenses, which include 15 counts of murder and terrorism, police confirmed on Wednesday. The tragic incident, involving a father and son duo, resulted in the deaths of 15 individuals and numerous injuries, raising concerns regarding antisemitism and extremist violence in Australia.
Funeral services for the victims commenced on Wednesday, with Rabbi Eli Schlanger, an assistant rabbi at Chabad Bondi Synagogue and a father of five, among those honored first. Rabbi Schlanger was celebrated for his significant contributions to Sydney's Jewish community, including prison visits and support for those in public housing.
Currently in a hospital under tight police surveillance, Naveed Akram, 24, is the accused. His father, Sajid Akram, 50, was shot at the site by law enforcement. Reports indicate that the father and son had traveled recently to the southern Philippines, an area known for Islamist militant presence, shortly before the attack. Initial findings suggest that the shooting may have been motivated by Islamic State influence.
New South Wales Premier Chris Minns announced that the parliament will reconvene on December 22 to enact immediate reforms to gun laws and protest regulations. Proposed amendments may restrict individual firearm ownership and regulate access to specific shotguns, alongside a review of rules regarding large public demonstrations in the wake of terror threats.
Several courageous individuals were recognized for their heroism during the assault. Ahmed al-Ahmed, who managed to disarm one of the attackers despite sustaining injuries, earned hero status. Police officer Jack Hibbert, only 22, suffered a serious eye injury while protecting bystanders. Currently, 23 people remain hospitalized across Sydney.
Among the victims were a Holocaust survivor, a little girl named Matilda, and several couples. A minute of silence was observed by residents and visitors at Bondi Beach to honor the lives lost, leading to the cancellation of planned New Year celebrations on the beachfront.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese committed to collaborating with the Jewish community to combat antisemitism and has pledged comprehensive gun law reforms. Investigations are underway to understand how the shooters were able to legally obtain high-powered weapons despite existing surveillance measures.
This tragic event has plunged Australia into mourning while authorities act to enhance gun regulations and security measures to avert future incidents.
