Konduga, Borno State: An explosion at a teashop in the Konduga area of Nigeria’s Borno state resulted in at least 16 deaths and critically wounded dozens more on Wednesday around 8 p.m. local time, according to local officials. The explosion occurred in a roadside market in Kawori, approximately 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the state capital, Maiduguri.
Authorities have yet to determine the perpetrators of the attack, but suspicions point towards Boko Haram, the Islamic militant group responsible for a prolonged insurgency in Nigeria and neighboring countries since 2009. This latest attack follows a recent triple suicide bombing in Gwoza, another town in Borno state.
The bomb used in the Kawori attack was identified as an improvised explosive device (IED) planted in the teashop. Unlike previous incidents, this was not a suicide bombing, police confirmed. The state emergency management agency reported that about 24 people were seriously injured, while police noted that the number of critically wounded is still being assessed.

In response to the bombing, the state government has imposed a 24-hour curfew to maintain order. This curfew coincides with protests against Nigeria’s rising cost of living in Maiduguri, where police used tear gas to disperse demonstrators.
Boko Haram and its splinter group, the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), have caused significant suffering in Nigeria and neighboring countries, resulting in over 35,000 deaths and displacing 2.6 million people over the past 15 years. Their ultimate goal is to establish an Islamic state across the region, particularly in Nigeria.
Despite claims of progress against the insurgency, Boko Haram and ISWAP continue to target civilians and expand their operations. This ongoing violence underscores the challenges in tackling the insurgency and securing the region.
"Hardly a day goes by without a Boko Haram incident against civilians, particularly in Borno State," said Malik Samuel, a researcher on the Lake Chad conflict. "Many attacks go unreported due to restricted access to affected areas."
The situation remains dire as authorities work to manage the aftermath of the attack and prevent further violence in the region. The need for effective security measures and humanitarian aid is more critical than ever to support the affected communities and restore peace.
