On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi set a serious tone for the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament, referencing the recent election turnout in Bihar as a testament to India's democratic vitality. He commended the significant involvement of women voters, declaring that India has “lived democracy and bolstered faith in it”.
Addressing the Opposition, still reeling from the Bihar assembly election defeat, PM Modi offered sharp advice without directly naming any parties. He urged leaders to forgo theatrics in the House, emphasizing the need for action over drama. He expressed hope that the Opposition would move past the Bihar results, although recent comments suggested they remained unsettled.
In the Bihar elections, the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance secured 202 out of 243 seats, while the Congress-led INDIA alliance gained just 35. PM Modi cautioned that such a victory should not lead to complacency within the ruling party and insisted that Parliament focus on crucial legislative tasks.
The Winter Session, running until December 19, is anticipated to be tumultuous, particularly regarding the Opposition’s insistence on discussing the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. During three meetings held on Sunday—an all-party meeting along with Business Advisory Committee sessions—Opposition leaders asserted that the session should not proceed without addressing SIR. Some hinted that government inaction would lead to dysfunction in the House.
Despite this, Kiren Rijiju, the parliamentary affairs minister, maintained that no party openly threatened to disrupt the session after the all-party meeting. He reiterated the government's dedication to maintaining smooth proceedings, insisting that disagreements should not hinder productivity.
Concurrently, the government has planned the introduction of 10 new bills and a discussion to commemorate the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram. With both sides firm in their positions, the opening day suggests potential for fiery debates, although calls for restraint and collaboration continue to echo.
