Washington DC: Today, US President Joe Biden signed into law the "Resolve Tibet Act," which addresses China's occupation of Tibet by emphasizing peaceful resolution through international law and dialogue with the Dalai Lama or his representatives without preconditions.
The Act, officially titled the Promoting a Resolution to the Tibet-China Dispute Act, reaffirms American policy that the Tibet issue should be peacefully resolved in accordance with international law. It calls for direct dialogue between China and the Dalai Lama's representatives to seek a negotiated settlement that respects Tibetans' religious, cultural, linguistic, and historical identity.
"The Resolve Tibet Act directly confronts China's harsh treatment of the Tibetan people," remarked Tencho Gyatso, President of the International Campaign for Tibet, highlighting its significance in promoting Tibetan rights.
The legislation recognizes Tibetans as a distinct people entitled to self-determination under international law. It rejects China's claims that Tibet has historically been part of China, counters disinformation propagated by Beijing, and supports efforts to empower Tibetans to control their future.

The Dalai Lama's longstanding call for genuine autonomy for Tibetans resonates strongly in the Act, which aims to bolster Tibetan voices and rights amid ongoing repression.
The Central Tibetan Administration welcomed the Act, emphasizing its role in countering Chinese misinformation and supporting Tibetan rights. Similarly, Students for a Free Tibet celebrated the Act's passage as a testament to the global solidarity with Tibetans seeking freedom and independence.
In addition to diplomatic efforts, the Act mandates US actions to support Tibetan autonomy and rights, including coordination with international partners to advance a negotiated agreement on Tibet's future.
Meanwhile, a memorial event for Tibetan activist Tulku Tenzin Delek Rinpoche, who died in Chinese custody, underscored ongoing calls for justice and freedom for political prisoners in Tibet. The event, held in Dharamshala, India, reiterated demands for China to release all Tibetan political prisoners.
The Resolve Tibet Act represents a significant step in US policy towards Tibet, signaling strong support for Tibetan rights and autonomy amidst international efforts to address China's policies in the region.
