Ben Sasse, who represented Nebraska in the U.S. Senate from 2015 until 2023, has bravely announced his diagnosis of stage-four metastatic pancreatic cancer. In an emotional post on social media, Sasse described the diagnosis as a "death sentence" but emphasized his determination to fight against the disease.
At 53, Sasse has established himself as a principled figure in politics. He was notably one of the seven Republicans who voted for the impeachment of former President Donald Trump following the events of January 6. Throughout his Senate career, Sasse has been vocal about Congress's duty to maintain integrity and ensure accountability, asserting that “some lines cannot be crossed.”
An alumnus of both Harvard and Yale, Sasse's journey extends beyond the political arena. Following his Senate tenure, he took on the role of president at the University of Florida, a position he resigned from in July 2024 to focus on caring for his wife, who recently experienced a stroke. The couple is parents to three children.
Sasse shared his diagnosis during the Advent season, a time for Christians to prepare spiritually for Christmas. He reflected on his faith with an inspiring resolve, stating, “I’m not going down without a fight.”
Beyond his health challenges, Sasse has been under scrutiny regarding his expenses while serving as university president. A report by the Florida Auditor General suggested he may have misused university funds, a claim Sasse firmly denies.
As he navigates this major health crisis, Sasse's candidness about his diagnosis resonates with many, showcasing both his faith and resilience and garnering widespread support.
