Colombo: The Beddagana Wetland Park, located near the new Parliament Complex in Kotte, Sri Jayewardenepura, is one of Sri Lanka’s most important urban wetlands. Spanning 18 hectares, the park is managed by the Urban Development Authority and serves as a sanctuary for wildlife, nature lovers, and researchers alike.

Just minutes away from Battaramulla town and the Parliament Complex, the park welcomes visitors daily from 6:00 am to 6:00 pm. A small entrance fee is charged.

A Rich Biodiversity Hotspot

The wetland is home to an extraordinary variety of flora and fauna. Reports show that more than 50 species of birds, 20 species of fish, and 119 types of butterflies can be observed here. It is also an important resting ground for migratory birds.

Endangered mammals, including the elusive fishing cat, thrive in this ecosystem — highlighting the park’s ecological importance.

Plants commonly found in Sri Lanka’s wet and dry zones grow here, such as white and purple water lilies, mangroves, salvinia, and medicinal plants known for their antiseptic and water-purifying qualities. Notably, the rare Hangovana plant and the Dyakira mangrove play a vital role in maintaining the wetland’s balance.

A Haven for Birdwatchers and Students

The park has become a popular spot for birdwatchers, school study tours, and wildlife photographers. Visitors can explore walking trails, observation decks, and watchtowers specially designed to blend into the natural setting. All structures were built on elevated pillars without heavy machinery, ensuring minimal disturbance to the fragile ecosystem.

Natural Protection for the City

Beyond its beauty, the Beddagana Wetland acts as a natural flood control system, absorbing excess rainwater like a sponge. It also helps reduce air pollution and improve oxygen levels, making it a valuable green lung for Colombo’s growing urban environment.

Conserving a Precious Ecosystem

The park was established in 2006 as part of a project by the Urban Development Authority, with support from the World Bank, to conserve 11 threatened wetlands around the new Parliament. Beddagana Wetland Park became the first step in this effort, designed to combine eco-friendly tourism, biodiversity conservation, and environmental education.

Today, it stands not only as a biodiversity hotspot but also as a place of mental well-being, where residents and visitors can connect with nature in the heart of Sri Lanka’s capital region.
