Baramulla Hit by Two Back-to-Back Earthquakes: Kashmir District Shaken

Baramulla, Jammu and Kashmir: The National Centre for Seismology (NCS) reported that Baramulla district in Jammu and Kashmir experienced two back-to-back earthquakes early Tuesday morning. The tremors, measuring magnitudes of 4.9 and 4.8, struck the region within a short span of each other.

The first earthquake, with a magnitude of 4.9 on the Richter scale, occurred at approximately 6:45 AM. This was followed by a second tremor registering 4.8 in magnitude, which was recorded at a depth of about 10 kilometers.

Fortunately, there have been no immediate reports of casualties or significant damage from these quakes. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to respond to any potential developments.

India's Seismic Vulnerability

India's susceptibility to earthquakes is a significant concern due to its geographical setting. The country is positioned on the Indian tectonic plate, which is in constant collision with the Eurasian plate. This tectonic activity makes India particularly vulnerable to seismic events.

The northern and northeastern regions of India, including Jammu and Kashmir, are particularly prone to earthquakes due to their mountainous terrain. India is classified into four seismic zones based on earthquake risk, with Zones 4 and 5 being the most active. Jammu and Kashmir fall within Zone 5, the most seismically active region in the country’s seismic zoning map.

The combination of high population density and the region’s rugged terrain increases the potential for damage in the event of an earthquake. The NCS and local authorities continue to assess the impact and provide updates as necessary.
