Southern California is facing strong winds again, making things worse for people already dealing with wildfires. The fires have already destroyed large areas and caused many deaths. Now, the winds could make things even more dangerous.

The fires, which started on January 7, have burned over 40,000 acres in Los Angeles and caused the deaths of at least 27 people. Firefighters have been able to control some of the fires, but strong winds that helped the fires spread are back again.
Some areas have had winds as strong as 88 miles per hour. These winds are a big worry because they can spread fires quickly. Experts are saying that if new fires start, they could grow very fast and become even more dangerous.
To be ready, local authorities have sent firefighters and equipment to areas at risk. This comes after people said that firefighters were not ready for the fires earlier this month. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass promised that they would be prepared for the worst over the next few days. She hopes things don’t get worse, but they are ready if they do.
The biggest fire, the Palisades Fire, is 59% under control, and evacuation orders have been changed to match the fire’s current spread. The Eaton Fire in Altadena is 87% under control.
Political Disagreements During the Crisis
While the people of Los Angeles deal with the disaster, some political leaders are fighting over how to handle the crisis. After becoming president, Donald Trump said he would visit the fire areas at the end of the week. This could be awkward because he has criticized California Governor Gavin Newsom for how he handled the situation.
Trump, after his inauguration, said, “We are watching fires still tragically burn from weeks ago without any defense.” He also mentioned that some rich people had lost their homes, calling it “interesting.” Newsom didn’t directly respond but said it was important to work together. He wrote on social media, “I look forward to President Trump’s visit to Los Angeles and his help in getting the government to support our recovery and rebuilding.”
Long-Term Problems with Fires
Experts say the reason these fires are so bad could be because of how people are changing the climate. The weather is getting more extreme, which makes fires worse. Plus, Southern California hasn’t had much rain in the last eight months, even though this is supposed to be the rainy season.
If rain does finally come, it could bring more problems. Officials say rain could cause mudslides, debris flows, and landslides, making it harder to clean up after the fires.
As Southern California waits for more danger, people continue to deal with the fires and the damage they’ve caused.
