Bangladesh is on edge as it braces for the funeral of anti-India figure Sharif Osman Hadi, whose death has ignited significant unrest across the nation. Hadi passed away in Singapore following an assassination attempt that left him critically injured in Dhaka. His demise has triggered protests and violent incidents, compelling the interim government to bolster security measures in major urban centers while calling for peace.
A noted leader of Inqilab Mancha, Hadi played a pivotal role in the upheaval that ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Known for his vehement opposition to India, he was infamous for his distribution of controversial pictorial representations of a so-called “Greater Bangladesh” that encompassed regions of India. He was shot while en route from Friday prayers on December 12, and despite immediate care in Dhaka, he was later transferred to Singapore, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Following Hadi’s death, demonstrations erupted in Dhaka and beyond, with radical factions setting ablaze various media outlets and attacking cultural institutions, including Udichi Shilpigoshthi and Chhayanat, resulting in severe damage to art and heritage works. This surge of violence has raised alarms regarding public safety and stability.
As the country prepares for Hadi's funeral near the National Parliament Building, security measures have escalated. Drone activity is prohibited, public body viewings are restricted, and attendees are barred from bringing bags or heavy items. In accordance with family wishes, Hadi will be interred near the tomb of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. Armed personnel will be deployed across Dhaka to prevent any further unrest.
Authorities have released images of two suspects related to the assassination and announced a $42,000 reward for credible information. Interim Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has pledged decisive action against the perpetrators while urging citizens to refrain from violence. However, unrest persists, with incidents of vandalism reported at the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum and violent encounters at the Indian High Commission in Chattogram. In light of the turmoil, the government has declared a one-day period of mourning as it seeks to restore order amid escalating tensions.
