The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is encountering backlash yet again, as national team players have voiced their frustration over the reinstatement of a contentious official. This decision comes during a turbulent time for Bangladesh cricket, following the team's exit from the forthcoming T20 World Cup.
The BCB has reinstated M. Najmul Islam as the head of its finance division, only a few days after he was sidelined from all responsibilities. His return has sparked anger and disillusionment among players, many of whom feel their concerns have been disregarded.
An experienced player, who wished to remain anonymous, responded sarcastically to the news, emphasizing the lack of player influence over board decisions. This sentiment highlights a broader dissatisfaction among players regarding their representation.
Najmul Islam had previously been removed from his post on January 18 after senior players protested against his derogatory remarks. The controversy ignited when he made disparaging comments defending the board’s choice not to send the team to India for the T20 World Cup, citing security issues. Following Bangladesh's withdrawal, the International Cricket Council (ICC) excluded the team from the tournament, replacing them with Scotland.
In the midst of the dispute, Najmul warned that players would face non-payment should Bangladesh opt out of the World Cup. He also branded the team unworthy of support due to its failure to secure any significant ICC titles, prompting significant backlash from both players and cricket authorities.
The Cricket Welfare Association of Bangladesh (CWAB) condemned his remarks and insisted on his ousting. Consequently, the board had to issue a show-cause notice and temporarily relieve him of his duties. However, his reinstatement has reopened previous wounds.
To add to the discord, Najmul formerly referred to ex-captain Tamim Iqbal as an “agent of India” after Tamim called for calm and strategic thought in managing ties with India. This remark was widely criticized and perceived as harmful to team cohesion and the broader cricket ethos.
Current Test captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has also raised concerns, advocating for a practical and balanced stance. He revealed the immense mental strain players are facing due to ongoing uncertainty and discord within the team.
The recurring controversies have underscored serious concerns regarding leadership and decision-making processes at the BCB. At a juncture where Bangladesh cricket requires stability, trust, and clear guidance, the board's actions seem to be exacerbating divisions rather than mending them.
If this situation remains mishandled, it might adversely affect player morale, public faith, and the future advancement of Bangladesh cricket.
