This week's unrest has resulted in at least 39 deaths, including 32 on Thursday alone, with casualties expected to rise as reports of clashes spread across nearly half of the country's 64 districts. The police reported that protesters engaged in extensive vandalism, torching and destroying numerous police stations and government offices.
The Dhaka headquarters of Bangladesh Television was notably attacked, with students storming the building and setting it on fire, causing it to remain offline. In addition, around 100 police officers were injured during the confrontations, and approximately 50 police booths were burned.
Critics argue that this system favors children of pro-government factions supporting Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who has been in power since 2009 and won her fourth consecutive term in January’s contested election. Her government is accused of using state institutions to maintain control and suppress dissent, including alleged extrajudicial killings of opposition activists.
In response to the escalating unrest, Hasina’s administration has ordered the indefinite closure of schools and universities while police intensify efforts to restore order. Mubashar Hasan, a Bangladesh expert at the University of Oslo, described the protests as a broader expression of frustration with Hasina's autocratic rule. He noted that the students are effectively denouncing her as a dictator.
Despite Hasina’s attempt to address the nation via the now-offline state broadcaster, students remain resolute. Protester Bidisha Rimjhim, 18, expressed the demands of the demonstrators: an apology from the Prime Minister and justice for those killed.
In response to the escalating violence, the police issued a statement warning that if the destruction continues, they will resort to "maximum use of law" to restore order.
