Dr. Shaikh Abdulla bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Bahrain’s Minister of Transport and Communications, took part in the 34th session of the General Assembly of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), held in the United Kingdom. This significant gathering brought together maritime leaders and professionals from around the globe to address issues of shipping safety, environmental stewardship, and sustainable maritime practices.
In his speech at the assembly, Dr. Shaikh Abdulla affirmed Bahrain's active participation in the IMO since its inception. He reiterated the Kingdom's strong backing for the IMO's mission to promote maritime safety, safeguard the environment, and ensure sustainable shipping operations on a global scale. The minister pointed out that adherence to international treaties is vital for advancing a safe and sustainable maritime sector in Bahrain.
Dr. Shaikh Abdulla elaborated on Bahrain's rigorous compliance with its international obligations through a comprehensive legislative and regulatory framework. A key element is the Maritime Law issued in 2022, which aligns with international maritime conventions. This legislation establishes clear guidelines for the protection of lives, property, and the safe navigation of vessels within Bahraini waters, reflecting Bahrain’s commitment to international standards while fostering a secure maritime environment.
The minister also emphasized Bahrain’s dedication to marine environmental protection, viewing the safeguarding of oceans and seas as both a humanitarian and ethical duty. The country employs a modern legislative framework based largely on the MARPOL Convention, which governs marine pollution prevention on a global scale. He noted Bahrain's efforts to adopt additional MARPOL annexes as part of its national strategy aiming for net-zero emissions by 2060, illustrating its commitment to harmonizing maritime development with ecological sustainability.
During his address, Dr. Shaikh Abdulla referenced this year's IMO theme: "Our Ocean, Our Commitment, Our Opportunity," emphasizing the paramount importance of oceans in the global economy, the environment, and human life. He highlighted that oceans serve as a lifeline for many, providing vital resources and transportation routes. The minister reinforced Bahrain’s simultaneous focus on economic advancement and environmental stewardship in its maritime initiatives.
Dr. Shaikh Abdulla also outlined Bahrain’s progress in maritime governance, showcasing the Kingdom's sophisticated regulatory framework designed to align with international norms. These initiatives aim to enhance vessel safety, minimize accidents, conserve marine biodiversity, and ensure eco-friendly shipping practices. This proactive approach positions Bahrain as a leader in both regional and global maritime matters.
In conclusion, Dr. Shaikh Abdulla reiterated Bahrain’s commitment to collaboration with the IMO and other international maritime institutions. He affirmed that the Kingdom will persist in its proactive stance to champion safe, sustainable, and environmentally accountable maritime practices, employing legal, ethical, and technological methods to guarantee that maritime activities are safe, efficient, and responsible for future generations.
