At least 69 people died after a boat sank off the coast of Morocco on December 19, 2024. The boat was traveling from West Africa to the Canary Islands. The boat had around 80 people on board. Only 11 people survived the accident. The Malian government gave this information after gathering details about the event. A crisis team has been set up to help and monitor the situation.

This accident is part of a bigger problem with people trying to reach Spain through the Canary Islands. The number of people coming from West Africa has been rising this year. In 2024, 41,425 people arrived in the Canary Islands, which is more than last year's total of 39,910. Many people are risking their lives because of problems in their home countries, like war, lack of jobs, and climate change that makes it hard to grow food.

On December 19, the Red Cross reported that 300 people arrived in the Canary Islands on six different boats. Sadly, one person died during the journey. The Atlantic route, which is used by many migrants, is the deadliest in the world. This route starts in places like Senegal, Gambia, Mauritania, and Morocco.

The group Walking Borders shared in their report that 9,757 people died at sea in 2024 while trying to reach the Canary Islands. The total number of deaths this year across all routes to Spain is a record 10,457. The route from Mauritania has been especially dangerous, with 6,829 deaths.

Walking Borders blamed the high number of deaths on a lack of rescue operations, poor government policies, and the way migrants are treated. They said governments focus too much on stopping immigration and not enough on saving lives.
