The US embassy in India shared on Friday that it has given out over one million nonimmigrant visas for the second year in a row. This includes the highest number of visitor visas ever issued, showing the huge demand from people in India wanting to travel to the United States for vacation, business, and education.
Washington is also working on setting up a US-based center to help people renew their H-1B visas in 2025. This will benefit a lot of people from India. Earlier this year, the US successfully started a program that let people with H-1B visas renew them without having to leave the United States. This made the process easier for many workers from India. The US government plans to make this program permanent by 2025.
In the past four years, the number of people from India visiting the US has grown five times. In the first 11 months of 2024, over two million people from India traveled to the United States, which is a 26% rise compared to the same time in 2023. Over five million people from India already have a nonimmigrant visa to visit the US, and the embassy keeps giving out thousands of visas every day.

The US embassy has also issued many immigrant visas, helping families reunite and skilled workers move to the US. These people who get immigrant visas can become permanent residents when they arrive in the US, joining the big Indian community already living there.
The embassy has helped over 24,000 American citizens in India with passports and other services. They also introduced a new version of the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) in 2024. This program helps the embassy contact Americans in emergencies and send them important safety messages.
The US embassy in India has also worked to make it easier for people to renew their nonimmigrant visas. They have streamlined the process, so it’s faster and applicants don’t have to wait as long.
More students from India are now going to the US to study than ever before. In 2024, India became the number one country sending students to the US. There are more than 331,000 Indian students studying in the US. India also continues to be the largest sender of graduate students, with nearly 200,000 students—an increase of 19% from the previous year.
Some changes have also been made for people visiting the US under exchange programs. Many exchange visitors can now stay in the US for two years after finishing their programs without having to return to India. The US also removed India from the Exchange Visitors Skills List, giving these visitors more freedom to stay longer and continue their education or work in the US.
The US embassy said that it is committed to building a stronger relationship with India and providing excellent services to everyone. The embassy praised its staff for their hard work and emphasized how important the partnership between the US and India is.
